Hayden Calls Time On Glittering Career

Double World Cup-winning Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden has announced his retirement and will be given a farewell at Brisbane later today (January 13th). Queenslander Hayden will appear during the innings break of the second Twenty20 International between Australia and South Africa. Hayden, 37, has chosen to end his playing days following a run of poor form and low scores in Tests against India, New Zealand and South Africa. Despite that, he finishes with 8,625 runs at 50.73 after 103 Test match appearances while he accumulated 6,131 runs in One 161 Day Internationals, helping Australia win World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

Hayden says he will not be pushed into retirement

Out of form Australian opener Matthew Hayden has vowed that he will not be pushed into retirement, despite selectors appearing to have made the decision for him. On a dramatic day when Hayden was dropped from the one-day team, chief selector Andrew Hilditch backtracked on an earlier pledge to take the batting veteran to the Ashes, the Daily Telegraph reported. Hayden said he will not be forced into retiring from his 103-Test career, but conceded that the next fortnight could be decision time if he wants to go out on his terms.

Langer backs Hayden to bat on beyond Sydney

Former Australian opener Justin Langer believes Matthew Hayden will play beyond the Sydney Test, but is also aware how quickly retirement plans can hatch. Langer says he was open to continuing his career beyond the 2006-07 Ashes, only to be struck by the retirement bolt on the eve of the Sydney Test. "I remember Gilly saying to me last year, ''I thought you were a bullshit artist when you said you''ll wake up one day and know it''s time to retire, but it just happened to me''," Langer recalled.
